(춘천=연합뉴스) 이재현 기자 = 26일 강원 강릉에서 서울로 향하는 영동고속도로 상행선 한복판에서 대형견이 출현해 한바탕 소동이 빚어졌다.

이 개는 2차 사고 방지를 위해 소방당국 등이 포획에 나선 지 1시간 50여 만에 붙잡혔으나 포획 과정에서 입으로 부는 마취 총인 블로우건에 맞아 결국 폐사했다.

한국도로공사 강원지역본부와 강원도소방본부 등에 따르면 이날 오후 4시 15분께 횡성군 둔내면 삽교리 인근 영동고속도로 강릉 방면 163.5㎞ 지점에서 목줄이 풀린 흰색 개 한 마리가 포착됐다.

이 개는 상행선 3∼4㎞의 갓길 구간을 오르내렸고, 고속도로에 출현한 개를 보고 화들짝 놀란 운전자들이 적지 않았다.

한 운전자는 "개가 도로로 뛰어들어 2차 사고가 나거나 이를 피해 급 핸들을 조작하다가 교통사고가 날 수 있는 위험천만한 상황이었다"며 가슴을 쓸어내렸다.

운전자 등의 신고를 받은 도로 공사 측이 포획에 나섰으나 실패했고, 결국 소방당국이 1시간 50여 만인 오후 6시 3분께 갓길 구간을 오르내리느라 탈진한 개를 포획하는 데 성공했다.

하지만 이 개는 입으로 부는 마취 총인 블로우건에 맞아 쓰러진 뒤 의식을 회복하지 못하고 끝내 폐사했다.

도로 공사 관계자는 "자칫 개가 놀라 고속도로로 뛰어들지 않도록 하기 위해 자극하지 않고 매우 조심스럽게 포획하느라 어려움이 많았다"고 말했다.

소방 당국도 "운전자의 시야 확보가 쉽지 않은 우로 굽은 고속도로이다 보니 2차 사고 위험이 매우 높은 상황이어서 블로우건을 이용한 포획이 불가피했다"고 말했다.

이어 "고속도로는 개가 접근하기 쉽지 않은 곳"이라며 "개가 폐사한 만큼 유기견 여부는 확인할 수 없게 됐다"고 덧붙였다.
