이스라엘 정치권, 폭력 사태에 일제히 우려

(카이로=연합뉴스) 노재현 특파원 = 이스라엘에서 반정부 시위 참가자들이 우파 시민들에게 폭행을 당하는 사건이 발생해 논란을 빚고 있다.

29일(현지시간) 타임스오브이스라엘 등 이스라엘 언론에 따르면 전날 밤 이스라엘의 지중해 도시 텔아비브에 있는 아미르 오하나 공안장관의 집 근처에서 반정부 시위가 열렸다.

시위대 수백명은 오하나 장관이 최근 베냐민 네타냐후 이스라엘 총리에 대한 규탄 집회를 강경 진압한다고 항의하는 중이었다.

그런데 갑자기 우파 성향 시민들이 깨진 유리병과 돌, 의자 등으로 시위대를 공격하면서 최소 5명이 다쳤다고 현지언론이 전했다.

이스라엘 경찰은 폭력을 행사한 3명을 붙잡아 경위를 조사 중이다.

정치권은 반정부 시위를 겨냥한 폭력 사건에 일제히 우려했다.

국방부 장관이자 중도 정당 '청백당' 대표인 베니 간츠는 29일 "시위할 권리를 행사하던 시민들이 어제 범죄 조직의 공격을 받았을 때 '레드라인'을 넘었다"며 "민주주의가 시험대에 섰다"고 지적했다.

이스라엘의 야권 지도자 야이르 라피드 의원은 트위터에 "어제 텔아비브에서 발생한 폭력과 유혈사태는 네타냐후 총리와 측근들 손에 달렸다"며 네타냐후 총리가 직접 나서 폭력 사건을 해결해야 한다고 주장했다.

네타냐후 총리는 시위대 폭행 사건의 파장이 자칫 커지지 않을까 조심스러운 모습이다.

네타냐후 총리는 페이스북에 "텔아비브 사건에 대한 조사가 진행 중"이라며 "경찰이 진상을 파악하고 책임자들을 법의 심판대에 세울 것으로 기대한다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "어떤 이유로도 폭력은 용납할 수 없다"고 강조했다.

네타냐후 총리는 최근 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 재확산과 부패 혐의로 곤혹스러운 상황이다.

이스라엘에서는 28일 신규 코로나19 확진자가 2천308명을 기록하는 등 코로나19 확진자 급증세가 이어지고 있어 국민의 불만이 크다.

또 뇌물수수와 배임, 사기 혐의를 받는 네타냐후 총리에 대한 재판이 이달 19일 두 번째로 진행됐다.

이스라엘에서는 부패 혐의를 이유로 네타냐후 총리의 퇴진을 요구하는 시위가 연일 벌어지고 있다.
