"도쿄올림픽 첫 경기 원전사고 후쿠시마서…종목·경기수 불변"

IOC 위원장 "관람객 축소 검토해야"…입장권 수입 감소할 듯

(도쿄=연합뉴스) 이세원 특파원 = 도쿄 올림픽·패럴림픽 조직위원회는 1년 연기된 도쿄올림픽의 종목과 경기 수를 축소하지 않고 추진한다는 방침이다.

조직위는 이같은 내용의 도쿄올림픽 일정과 경기장에 관한 세부 계획을 IOC 총회에 17일 보고했다고 요미우리(讀賣)신문 등 일본 언론이 18일 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 개막식은 내년 7월 23일, 폐막식은 8월 8일 도쿄도(東京都) 신주쿠(新宿)구에 있는 일본 국립경기장에서 열린다.

조직위는 첫 경기인 소프트볼 일본-호주전을 개막식보다 이틀 앞선 7월 21일 후쿠시마(福島)현에서 실시한다고 밝혔다.

그린피스 등 환경단체가 원전 사고 발생지인 후쿠시마의 방사선량이 안전한 수준인지 의문을 제기하는 가운데 이곳에서 일부 행사를 개최를 강행하는 것은 대회의 안전성에 대한 우려를 낳을 것으로 보인다.

아사히(朝日)신문에 따르면 도쿄올림픽은 도쿄를 비롯한 일본 내 9개 광역자치단체에 있는 42개 시설에서 33경기 339개 종목으로 추진된다. 조직위가 제시한 경기 일정과 경기장 배치 등은 연기 전의 계획을 기본적으로 이어받은 것이며 종목이나 경기 수는 그대로 유지됐다.

조직위는 이미 판매한 경기 입장권을 희망자에게 올가을 이후 환불할 계획이다.

토마스 바흐 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 위원장은 총회 후 열린 기자회견에서 코로나19 감염 확산을 막기 위한 올림픽 간소화 방안에 관한 질문에 "관람객을 줄이는 것은 검토해야 할 시나리오 중 하나"라고 말했다고 NHK가 전했다.

그는 개회식이나 폐회식 축소는 도쿄 조직위원회가 결정할 일이라고 전제하고서 "개최국의 환대나 올림픽의 가치를 보여주는 중요한 기회이며 포스트 코로나 시대의 첫 대회로서 조직위원회가 올바른 균형점을 찾아줄 것으로 생각한다"고 언급했다.

관람객 수를 줄이면 입장권 수입이 감소할 가능성이 크다.

올림픽을 1년 연기하기로 해 이미 일본 측의 부담이 커진 가운데 입장권 수입까지 축소하면 재정 압박은 한층 심해질 전망이다.

일본은 물론 세계 각국에서 코로나19 확산이 진정되지 않고 있어 현재로서는 개최 자체가 불투명한 상황이다.

바흐 위원장은 이날 회견에서 임기 연장을 목표로 내년 봄 IOC 회장 선거에 재출마할 뜻을 표명했다.

IOC 회장 임기는 8년이며 재선을 거쳐 4년간 연장할 수 있게 돼 있다.
