(서울=연합뉴스) 김동현 기자 = 해리 해리스 주한미국대사가 그의 트레이드마크와도 같은 콧수염을 잘랐다.

해리스 대사는 25일 트위터에 서울 종로구의 한 이발소를 방문한 영상을 올렸다.

영상에서 마스크를 쓰고 있는 해리스 대사는 "마스크가 저를 더욱더 덥게 만들고 물론 제 콧수염도 그렇다"면서 이발소로 들어간다.

이발소 사장은 "미국은 우리 한국에 참 고마운 나라"라며 해리스 대사를 반갑게 맞이하고 콧수염을 면도한다.

해리스 대사는 주일미군 아버지와 일본인 어머니 사이에서 태어난 일본계 미국인으로 한국에서 콧수염 때문에 원치 않는 주목을 받아왔다.

일각에서는 그가 방위비 분담금 협상이나 남북협력 등 한미 간 이견이 있는 사안에서 미국 입장을 강하게 대변할 때마다 그의 콧수염이 일제강점기 조선 총독을 연상시킨다며 비난해왔다.

한 시민단체는 규탄대회를 열어 해리스 대사 얼굴 사진에서 콧수염을 뽑는 퍼포먼스를 하기도 했다.

해리스 대사는 트위터에서 면도를 한 것에 대해 "잘한 결정이라고 생각한다"며 "콧수염을 기르고 마스크까지 착용하기에는 서울의 여름은 매우 덥고 습하다"고 밝혔다.

그는 "코로나 지침이 중요하니 마스크는 필수죠"라며 "오 사장님을 뵙게 되어 반가웠고 한미동맹을 중요하게 생각해주셔서 매우 감사했다"고 말했다.
