(무안=연합뉴스) 여운창 기자 = 김영록 전남지사와 더불어민주당 전남도당 서삼석 위원장은 23일 '의대 정원 확대계획 정부 발표에 따른 입장문'을 내고 "의과 대학이 없는 전남도에 의대 설립을 적극적으로 추진할 수 있게 돼 크게 환영한다"고 밝혔다.

이들은 "그동안 우리 지역은 의료 취약지가 많고 의료 수요는 매우 높지만 의대가 없어 상급 의료서비스 이용에 많은 불편과 어려움을 겪었다"며 "최신 시설의 국립의대와 대학병원이 설립되면 도민의 건강을 높이는 획기적인 전환점이 될 것이다"고 강조했다.

이어 "정부의 이번 조치는 도민의 염원으로 이뤄낸 값진 결실"이라며 "전남의 동부권과 서부권에 각각 대학병원과 강의캠퍼스를 설치해 양 지역에 의대 신설의 혜택이 고루 돌아가도록 정부에 강력히 건의하겠다"고 강조했다.

또 "오늘의 결정을 계기로 100명 정원 규모의 의과대학을 성공적으로 설립해 도민의 건강권과 행복권을 지킬 수 있도록 모든 노력을 다하겠다"고 약속했다.

김 지사와 서 위원장은 "의대 설립에 도정의 모든 역량을 결집하겠다"며 "도내 의과대학이 지역 의료의 심장으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 각별한 관심과 꾸준한 성원을 부탁드린다"고 말했다.
