(이스탄불=연합뉴스) 김승욱 특파원 = 최근 아르메니아와 국경에서 무력 충돌을 빚은 아제르바이잔이 터키와 합동 군사훈련을 하기로 했다.

아제르바이잔 국방부는 27일(현지시간) 성명을 내고 "양국 간 군사 협력 협정에 따라 터키군과 대규모 합동 군사훈련을 시행한다"고 밝혔다.

국방부는 성명을 통해 "아제르바이잔과 터키 양국의 육군과 공군이 참여하는 대규모 전술훈련을 국내에서 시행할 것"이라며 "양국의 병력과 장갑차, 포병 전력, 항공 장비가 동원될 것"이라고 전했다.

이어 "다음 달 1일부터 5일까지 바쿠(아제르바이잔 수도)와 나히체반에서 육군 훈련을 시행하며, 이달 29일부터 8월 10일까지 바쿠, 나히체반, 간자, 퀴르데미르, 예블라흐 등에서 공군이 참여하는 훈련을 한다"고 덧붙였다.

캅카스 지역의 옛 소련 국가인 아제르바이잔은 인구의 90%가 튀르크 계열로 이웃 국가인 터키와 군사·경제적으로 밀접한 관계다.

그러나 다른 이웃 국가인 아르메니아와는 나고르노-카라바흐 지역에 대한 영유권 문제로 1988년부터 1994년까지 분쟁을 겪었다.

소련 붕괴 과정에서 이 지역 인구의 다수를 차지하는 아르메니아계 주민이 1991년 독립공화국을 선포하자 이들을 지원하는 아르메니아와 독립을 저지하려는 아제르바이잔 간 전쟁이 일어나 약 3만 명이 목숨을 잃었다.

양국 국경에서는 지금까지도 크고 작은 무력충돌이 벌어지고 있으며, 지난 12일부터 사흘간 국경에서 교전이 벌어져 아제르바이잔 측에서 12명이 숨지고 4명이 부상했다.

이에 터키는 아제르바이잔에 무인기와 미사일을 배치하는 등 군사지원을 강화하기로 했다.

또 훌루시 아카르 터키 국방부 장관은 "아르메니아는 그들이 한 일에 대해 대가를 치르고 책임을 지게 될 것"이라며 "아제르바이잔을 전폭적으로 지지한다"고 밝혔다.
