(이스탄불=연합뉴스) 김승욱 특파원 = 터키가 아르메니아와 국경 분쟁을 겪고 있는 아제르바이잔에 무인기와 미사일을 배치하는 등 군사지원을 강화하기로 했다.

이스마일 데미르 터키 방위산업청장은 17일(현지시간) 성명을 내고 "무인기와 탄약, 미사일을 비롯해 우리의 경험과 기술을 동원해 아제르바이잔을 도울 것"이라고 밝혔다.

그러면서 "두 형제 국가가 완전히 단결하고 있다는 것을 세계에 보여줄 필요가 있다"고 강조했다.

이어 "터키는 새로운 방어 시스템을 아제르바이잔에 대여하고, 아제르바이잔과 방어 시스템의 현대화 및 유지·보수 작업을 함께 할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

앞서 전날에는 훌루시 아카르 터키 국방부 장관이 "아르메니아는 그들이 한 일에 대해 대가를 치르고 책임을 지게 될 것"이라며 "아제르바이잔을 전폭적으로 지지한다"고 밝혔다.

캅카스 지역의 옛 소련 국가인 아제르바이잔은 인구의 90%가 튀르크 계열로 이웃 국가인 터키와 군사·경제적으로 밀접한 관계다.

그러나 다른 이웃 국가인 아르메니아와는 나고르노-카라바흐 지역에 대한 영유권 문제로 1988년부터 1994년까지 분쟁을 겪었다.

소련 붕괴 과정에서 이 지역 인구의 다수를 차지하는 아르메니아계 주민이 1991년 독립공화국을 선포하자 이들을 지원하는 아르메니아와 독립을 저지하려는 아제르바이잔 간 전쟁이 일어나 약 3만 명이 목숨을 잃었다.

이후로도 양국은 크고 작은 무력충돌을 빚었으며, 지난 12일부터 사흘간 양국 국경에서 교전이 벌어졌다.

아제르바이잔은 무력충돌 결과 11명이 사망하고 4명이 부상했으며, 아르메니아 군 약 100명을 사살했다고 주장했다.
