보훈처, 백선엽 안장자 정보에 '친일행위자'…"관계기관 협의로 게재"

(서울=연합뉴스) 최평천 기자 = 국가보훈처가 '6·25전쟁영웅'이자 '친일파'라는 양면적 평가를 받는 고(故) 백선엽 장군의 현충원 안장자 정보에 '친일반민족행위자'라는 사실을 명시했다.

17일 국가보훈처가 운영하는 국립대전현충원 홈페이지 '안장자 찾기'에 따르면 백 장군의 안장 정보에 '대통령 소속 친일반민족행위 진상규명위원회에서 친일반민족행위자로 결정(2009년)'이라고 게재됐다.

보훈처는 "백 장군을 친일반민족행위자로 게재한 배경 및 근거는 2018년 국회 등에서 다양한 지적이 있어 관계 기관 협의를 거쳐 관련 사항을 게재하기로 한 것"이라고 설명했다.

백 장군 외에도 친일반민족행위 진상규명위원회에서 친일반민족행위자로 결정된 11명(김석범·백홍석·김백일 등)이 국립현충원에 안장돼있다. 이들의 안장자 정보에도 '친일반민족행위자로 결정됐다'는 내용이 게재됐다.

일각에서는 현충원에 안장된 모든 인물의 '과'(過)는 명시하지 않으면서 친일에 대한 과만 명시하는 것은 형평성에 맞지 않고, 친일 내용을 홈페이지에 게재하는 것에 대한 명확한 근거 규정이 없다는 지적이 나온다.

보훈처 관계자는 "향후 안장자 정보를 게재할 때 명시할 수 있는 부분에 대한 기준을 정하는 것 등을 포함해 관계기관과 심도 있게 논의하겠다"고 말했다.

백 장군은 1943년 12월 간도특설대 기박련(기관총·박격포중대) 소속으로 중국 팔로군 공격 작전에 참여했다.

간도특설대는 일제 패망 전까지 동북항일연군과 팔로군을 대상으로 108차례 토공 작전을 벌였고, 이들에게 살해된 항일 무장세력과 민간인은 172명에 달한다.

일부 정치인과 독립운동가 선양단체는 이러한 백 장군의 친일 행적을 이유로 백 장군이 현충원에 안장돼서는 안 된다고 주장했다.
