필리핀 두테르테 대통령 "시진핑 중국 주석에 백신 요청"

"남중국해 분쟁, 전쟁보다 외교로 풀어야"

(홍콩=연합뉴스) 안승섭 특파원 = 로드리고 두테르테 필리핀 대통령이 시진핑(習近平) 중국 국가주석에게 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 백신을 요청했다고 홍콩 사우스차이나모닝포스트(SCMP)가 28일 보도했다.

SCMP에 따르면 두테르테 대통령은 전날 국회 국정연설에서 "나흘 전 시진핑 주석에게 전화를 걸어 필리핀이 먼저 코로나19 백신을 획득하거나 구매할 수 있도록 요청했다"고 밝혔다.

두테르테 대통령은 "우리의 조국을 번영시키겠다는 꿈이 코로나19 팬데믹(세계적 대유행)으로 인해 꺾였다"며 코로나19로 인해 타격을 입은 필리핀 경제를 일으키겠다는 의지를 천명했다.

전날까지 필리핀에서는 8만2천40명의 코로나19 확진자가 발생해 1천945명이 사망했다. 동남아시아에서는 인도네시아 다음으로 코로나19 감염자 수가 많다.

두테르테 대통령은 중국과 갈등을 겪는 남중국해 문제에 대해서도 유화적인 태도를 나타냈다.

그는 남중국해 영유권 분쟁과 관련해 외교적 해결이 최선의 방책이며, 전쟁을 대안으로 고려할 수는 없다는 뜻을 나타냈다.

두테르테 대통령은 "중국도, 우리도 영유권을 주장하고 있지만, 중국은 무기가 있고 우리는 없다"며 "그래서 간단하게 말해 중국이 그 부동산(남중국해)을 소유하고 있는 것"이라고 말했다.

그는 "그래서 우리가 무엇을 할 수 있는가"라며 "우리는 전쟁을 해야 하지만 나는 할 수 없다. 다른 대통령이라면 할 수 있을지 모르지만, 나는 할 수 없다. 속수무책이다. 그것을 기꺼이 인정하겠다"고 덧붙였다.

중국 남부와 필리핀, 인도네시아, 베트남 등으로 둘러싸인 남중국해는 어업권과 자원 영유권 등을 놓고 인접국 간 분쟁이 끊이지 않는 해역이다.

중국은 피어리 크로스 암초, 수비 암초, 미스치프 암초 등 7곳을 인공섬으로 조성해 군사 목적으로 사용할 수 있는 시설들을 계속 설치, 주변국과 갈등을 빚고 있다.
