(파리=연합뉴스) 김용래 특파원 = 마스크를 쓰지 않은 사람들의 승차를 거부했다가 집단폭행을 당해 뇌사 상태에 빠진 프랑스의 버스 기사가 결국 숨졌다.

11일(현지시간) 일간 르몽드 등 프랑스 언론에 따르면, 프랑스 남서부 바욘에서 최근 버스를 타려던 2명의 남자로부터 폭행당한 시내버스 기사 필리프 몽기요(59)씨가 전날 병원에서 숨을 거뒀다.

그의 가족들은 회생 가능성이 없다는 의료진의 판단에 따라 연명치료 중단을 결정했다.

몽기요씨는 지난 5일 바욘 시내에서 버스를 운행하다가 2명의 승객에게 폭행을 당한 뒤 의식을 잃은 채 병원으로 옮겨졌고 다음 날 뇌사 판정을 받았다.

경찰 조사 결과 그는 마스크를 쓰지도 않고 승차권도 없이 버스를 타려는 사람들에게 마스크 착용을 요구하고 승차 거부 의사를 밝혔다가, 이들로부터 집단 폭행을 당했다.

경찰은 두 명의 용의자를 체포해 폭행치사 혐의로 수사 중이다. 이들은 22, 23세 남성으로 유사 범죄 전과가 있는 것으로 파악됐다.

프랑스 정부는 코로나19 확산을 막기 위해 보건수칙을 준수하려다가 숨진 몽기요씨에게 적절한 보상이 이뤄지도록 조치하고 가해자들을 엄중히 처벌한다는 방침이다.

장 카스텍스 총리는 트위터에서 "국가는 직무를 충실히 수행하려다가 비열한 폭력에 당한 그를 모범 시민으로 인정하고 잊지 않을 것"이라면서 "흉악한 범죄자들을 법에 따라 엄벌할 것"이라고 강조했다.

제랄드 다르마냉 내무장관은 이날 바욘을 방문해 치안 대책을 점검하고 숨진 몽기요씨가 일했던 버스회사의 기사들과 노조 관계자들과도 면담할 예정이다.
