반독점 청문회 앞두고 "아마존 성공은 '위대한 미국' 덕분" 강조

(서울=연합뉴스) 이재영 기자 = 세계 최고의 부자인 제프 베이조스 아마존 최고경영자(CEO)가 대형 정보기술(IT)업체 독점 의혹 관련 미국 하원 청문회에 출석하기에 앞서 청문위원들에게 가정사를 담은 공개서한을 보냈다.

베이조스는 서한에서 아마존이 미국 경제와 사회에 기여한 바를 열거하는 한편 아마존이 위험을 감수하는 기업가를 지원하는 미국의 문화와 '소비자의 선택' 덕에 성공했으며 현재도 다른 기업과 치열한 경쟁을 벌이고 있다고 강조했다.

아마존은 시장을 지배하며 '갑질'하는 회사가 아니며 미국에 기여하는 회사라고 호소하는 취지로 보인다.

29일(현지시간) 열린 하원 법사위원회 반(反)독점소위 청문회에 제출한 서한에서 베이조스는 자신이 미성년자 미혼모의 아들로 태어났다고 밝혔다.

그는 재킷 하나 손에 쥐고 사실상 무일푼으로 미국에 건너온 쿠바 난민 출신 남성과 어머니가 결혼하면서 4살 때 새아버지가 생겼고 어릴 땐 원자력위원회(AEC)에서 봉직한 할아버지의 영향을 많이 받았다고 소개했다.

베이조스가 가정사를 구구절절이 공개한 것은 처음이다.

베이조스는 "세계에서 가장 소비자 중심적인 기업을 만들고자 26년 전 아마존을 창업했다"면서 "수백만 종의 책을 보유한 온라인서점을 만들겠다는 결정은 머리가 아닌 마음으로 내렸다"고 말했다.

이어 아마존의 성공은 '정해진 운명'이었다며 "다른 나라와 달리 우리가 사는 위대한 미국은 사업가로서 위험을 감수하는 것을 비난하지 않고 지원한다"고 성공을 '나라 덕'으로 돌렸다.

아마존이 미국에서 만들어진 것은 "우연이 아니다"라고도 말했다.

베이조스는 "아마존이 기업으로서 영속할 수 있는 이유는 끊임없이 위험을 감수하기 때문이다"라면서 "아마존 내에 '오늘이 창업 첫날'이라는 정신이 유지되도록 노력하고 있다"고 강조했다.

그는 소비자는 결코 만족할 줄 모르고 항상 더 나은 것을 원하기에 소비자의 관심을 붙잡으려면 '창업 첫날' 정신으로 서비스를 꾸준히 향상해야 한다면서 "이러한 '소비자 최우선 정책'이 아마존의 강점"이라고 덧붙였다.

베이조스는 아마존 총이익의 80% 이상이 여전히 초기사업영역인 소매판매에서 나온다면서 "소매판매업 특성은 소비자에게 직접 물건을 전달해야 한다는 것인데 이런 일자리는 중국 등에 아웃소싱으로 넘길 수 없다"고 설명했다.

그러면서 "아마존엔 미국 소비자에게 물건을 전달할 미국 노동자가 필요하다"면서 아마존이 미국 전역에서 100만명가량을 직접 고용하고 있다고 강조했다.

또 아마존이 지난 10년간 미국에 2천700억달러(약 322조5천억원)를 투자했고 약 70만명의 간접고용을 창출했다고도 밝혔다.

그는 아울러 신종 코로나바이러스 위기(코로나19)를 맞아 17만5천명을 더 고용했고 노동자 안전과 소비자에게 생필품을 배달하는 데 지난 2분기에만 40억달러(약 4조7천억원)를 썼다고도 설명했다.

베이조스는 아마존에 전 세계 170만개 중소기업이 입점해있다며 아마존이 소상공인도 살렸다고도 주장했다.

또 아마존의 지분 80%가 외부인 소유라면서 지난 26년간 1조달러(1천119조4천억원)를 배당했으며 이는 아마존 지분을 보유한 연기금에 돌아갔다고 밝혔다.

기후변화 방지와 노숙인 등을 위한 사회공헌활동도 소개했다.

베이조스는 아마존의 시장점유율이 25조달러(약 2경980조원) 규모 세계소매시장을 기준으론 1% 이하, 미국소매시장을 기준으론 4% 이하라고 주장했다.

이어 "아마존은 몸집이 2배는 큰 타깃, 코스트코, 크로거, 월마트 등 기존업체들과 매일 맞서고 있다"면서 소매시장이 특히 경쟁적이라고 덧붙였다.

그는 "아마존의 직원이 10명, 1천명, 1만명일 때, 또 지금처럼 100만명일 때 어떤 일이 가능한지 나는 안다"면서 "대형 비행기를 차고에서 만들 수 없는 것처럼 세상엔 소기업이 필요한 만큼 대기업도 필요하다"고 강조했다.
