영국, 비만과의 전쟁…존슨 총리 "나도 살 뺐다"

저녁 9시 전 패스트푸드 TV광고 금지, 자전거 타기 처방 확대 등 포함될 듯

전문가들, 과체중인 사람이 코로나19에 더 취약하다고 지적

(파리=연합뉴스) 김용래 특파원 = 영국 정부가 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)에 따른 사망 위험을 낮추고 국민건강 증진을 위해 대대적인 '비만과의 전쟁'을 준비 중이다.

26일(현지시간) BBC 방송 등 영국 언론들에 따르면 총리실은 오는 27일 '더 나은 건강'(Better Health)이라는 이름의 비만 예방 프로젝트를 발표한다.

구체적인 내용은 아직 공개되지 않았지만 저녁 9시 전 방송에서 패스트푸드 광고를 금지하는 방안, 비만 환자들에게 의사들이 자전거 타기 처방을 확대하는 방안, 음식점 메뉴의 칼로리 표시 의무화, 자전거전용도로 확충 등이 포함될 것으로 알려졌다.

영국 정부 대변인은 이날 "코로나19는 우리 모두에게 비만의 즉각적이고 장기적인 리스크를 일깨웠다. (보리스) 존슨 총리는 이 순간을 더 건강하고 활기차며 좋은 식습관을 갖도록 하는 기회로 여기고 있다"고 밝혔다.

영국 정부가 갑자기 비만과의 전쟁을 선포한 것은 과체중인 사람이 그렇지 않은 사람보다 코로나19에 더 취약하다는 각종 연구 결과에 따른 것이다.

잉글랜드공중보건청(PHE)은 전날 내놓은 보고에서 비만이 코로나바이러스 감염에 따른 사망 위험을 40% 높이는 것으로 분석했다. 미국 질병통제예방센터(CDC)도 코로나19 고위험군 리스트에 65세 이상 고령자 외에도 비만, 임신 등을 추가한 바 있다.

영국 정부는 자국 성인의 3분의 2 이상이 과체중인 것으로 보고 있다.

특히 코로나19에 감염돼 중환자실까지 갔다가 회생한 존슨 총리의 개인적 경험이 반영됐다는 것이 중론이다.

존슨은 코로나19에서 회복된 이후 자신의 병세가 중증으로 발전한 원인이 과체중에 있다고 말해왔다.

지난달 더메일온선데이와의 인터뷰에서는 자신이 코로나19 회복 과정에서 몸무게가 줄었고 다이어트를 하고 있다면서 "비만에 대처하면 더 행복해지고 코로나19 같은 질병에도 더 잘 대응할 수 있을 것"이라고 말했다.

지난 24일 취임 1주년 BBC 방송 인터뷰에서도 자신이 전보다 덜 먹고 더 많이 운동해 체중을 줄였다고 강조했다.
