아르메니아-아제르바이잔, 국경서 사흘째 교전…"사상자 다수"(종합)

서로 '상대가 먼저 공격' 주장…아제르 "적군 병력 100명 제거"

(모스크바=연합뉴스) 유철종 특파원 = 적대 관계에 있는 캅카스 지역의 옛 소련국가 아르메니아와 아제르바이잔 군인들이 14일(현지시간) 국경 지역에서 사흘째 교전을 벌여 양측 모두에서 상당수 사상자가 발생했다고 러시아 언론과 AP 통신 등이 보도했다.

인테르팍스·리아노보스티 통신 등 러시아 언론에 따르면 아제르바이잔 국방부는 이날 아르메니아와 접경한 자국 북서부 토부스 지역에서 아르메니아군과 교전을 벌였다고 밝혔다.

아제르바이잔 국방차관 케림 벨리예프는 이날 교전에서 자국 장성급 및 영관급 장교 2명을 포함한 7명의 군인이 숨졌다면서 전투는 계속되고 있다고 전했다.

벨리예프 차관은 "지난 12일부터 계속된 교전에서 아르메니아 병력 최대 100명과 군사 장비, 지휘소 등을 제거했다"고 주장했다.

하지만 이같은 주장은 아직 확인되지 않았다.

아제르바이잔 국방부는 국경 지역 마을을 아르메니아 측이 먼저 포격했다고 지적했다.

아제르바이잔 외무부는 이날 아르메니아 측의 포격으로 민간인 1명도 사망했다고 전했다.

반면 아르메니아 국방부는 자국 북동부 타부슈 지역의 접경 도시 베르드를 아제르바이잔 측이 무인기로 공격했다고 반박했다.

그러면서 이날 아제르바이잔 측의 공격으로 아르메니아 장교 2명이 사망했고, 뒤이어 다른 군인 2명이 숨졌다고 밝혔다.

아르메니아-아제르바이잔 국경 지역에선 지난 12일부터 양국 군 간에 교전이 시작돼 사흘째 계속되고 있다.

교전 첫날 아제르바이잔 국방부는 아르메니아 군의 포격으로 자국 군인 4명이 사망하고 또 다른 4명이 부상했다고 밝혔다. 아르메니아는 아제르바이잔 군인들이 먼저 국경을 침범했다고 맞섰다.

양측의 교전은 13일에도 간헐적으로 계속된 것으로 알려졌다.

아제르바이잔과 아르메니아는 최근 며칠 간 교전이 벌어진 곳에서 수백 km 떨어진 나고르노-카라바흐 지역에 대한 영유권 문제를 두고 지난 1988년부터 1994년까지 분쟁을 겪었다.

1988년 소련 붕괴 과정에서 이 지역 인구의 다수를 차지하는 아르메니아계 주민들이 아제르바이잔으로부터의 이탈을 결정하고 1991년 독립공화국을 선포한 뒤 몇 년 동안 이들을 지원하는 아르메니아와 독립을 저지하려는 아제르바이잔 간에 전쟁이 일어나 약 3만 명이 목숨을 잃었다.

1994년 러시아의 중재로 휴전이 성립된 이후 분쟁 지역이 사실상 아르메니아 통치하로 들어갔지만 아제르바이잔은 이 지역에 대한 주권을 지속적으로 주장해 양측 국경 지역에서 군인들 간에 총격 사건이 발생하는 등 충돌이 끊이지 않고 있다.

러시아, 프랑스, 미국 등이 공동의장을 맡은 유럽안보협력기구(OSCE) 산하 민스크 그룹의 중재로 평화협상이 진행돼 왔으나 2009년 이후 교착 상태다.

현재 나고르노-카라바흐 지역은 국제법적으론 아제르바이잔 영토지만 아르메니아가 실효 지배하고 있다.

러시아는 이날 교전에 깊은 우려를 표시하며 양측에 자제와 휴전 의무 준수를 촉구했다.
