(서울=연합뉴스) 고일환 기자 = 고집스럽게 마스크를 거부했던 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령의 태도 변화에 미국 언론들도 혀를 내두르는 분위기다.

신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 사태에 대처하기 위한 당연한 조치이지만, 갑작스러운 입장 변경이 안면몰수 수준이라는 것이다.

AP통신은 21일(현지시간) 백악관에서 열린 코로나19 브리핑에서 마스크를 꺼내 보인 트럼프 대통령이 마스크 착용을 거부한 과거 발언들을 소개했다.

트럼프 대통령은 지난 4월 "마스크를 착용하고 싶지 않다"며 나름대로 이유를 설명했다.

백악관 집무실에서 마스크 차림으로 전 세계의 지도자를 맞이하는 것은 자신의 리더십에 어울리지 않는다는 취지였다.

다만 트럼프 대통령은 "나중에 마음을 바꿀지도 모르겠다"며 여지를 남겨두기는 했다.

트럼프 대통령은 5월에는 마스크를 쓴 조 바이든 전 부통령을 조롱하는 트윗을 리트윗하며 간접적으로 조롱에 동참했다.

검은색 마스크와 검은색 선글라스로 얼굴 대부분을 가린 바이든 전 부통령의 모습이 범죄자를 연상시켜 좋지 않은 느낌을 준다는 뉘앙스를 담은 트윗이었다.

5월 브리핑에서 트럼프 대통령은 마스크를 쓴 한 기자에게 마스크를 벗고 질문을 해달라고 요청한 일도 있었다.

기자가 요청을 거부하자 트럼프 대통령은 조롱 조로 "정치적으로 올바르길 원하는군"이라고 말하기도 했다.

트럼프 대통령은 지난달에는 일부 미국인들은 코로나19 예방 수단이 아니라 자신에 대한 반감을 표시하기 위해 마스크를 착용한다는 주장을 내놓기도 했다.

그랬던 트럼프 대통령이 한순간에 '마스크 착용은 애국'이라는 예찬론을 펼친 것은 상식적으로 설명하기 힘들다는 게 비판적인 현지 언론의 시각이다.

이날 AP통신 기사도 트럼프 대통령이 마스크 착용에 대한 입장을 바꾼 배경이나 이유보다는 '말 바꾸기' 자체에 주목했다.
