부족 지도자들, 이집트의 리비아 내전 개입 요청

(카이로=연합뉴스) 노재현 특파원 = 압델 파타 엘시시 이집트 대통령은 16일(현지시간) 이집트 수도 카이로에서 리비아 내 부족 지도자들을 만났다고 이집트 언론 알아흐람이 보도했다.

전날 카이로에 도착한 부족 지도자들은 리비아 동부 군벌 칼리파 하프타르 리비아국민군(LNA) 사령관을 지지하는 세력이다.

엘시시 대통령은 이들과 만난 자리에서 "이집트 정부의 목표는 리비아인들의 자유 의지를 지지하는 것"이라고 말했다고 엘시시 대통령의 대변인 바삼 라디가 전했다.

리비아 부족 지도자들은 이집트군이 리비아 주권을 보호하는 데 개입해야 한다고 말했다고 로이터통신이 보도했다.

앞서 리비아 동부 의회는 14일 리비아에서 터키군에 맞서기 위해 이집트가 군사적으로 개입해야 한다고 주장했다.

엘시시 대통령은 지난달 20일 리비아와 가까운 서부 군 기지를 시찰하며 "국경 안에서 어떤 임무도 수행할 준비를 해라. 필요할 경우 국경 밖에서도 그렇게 해야 한다"며 리비아 내전에 직접 개입할 개연성을 시사했다.

이집트 정부는 그동안 하프타르 사령관 측에 은밀하게 무기 등을 지원해온 것으로 알려졌다.

이집트가 리비아 내전에 파병 등으로 직접 개입할 경우 리비아에서 주변국의 대리전이 격화될 것이라는 우려가 나온다.

터키는 작년 11월 수도 트리폴리를 통치하는 리비아통합정부(GNA)와 군사·안보 협정을 체결한 뒤 올해 리비아에 병력을 파견했다.

터키군으로부터 드론(무인항공기) 등의 지원을 받은 리비아통합정부는 하프타르 측이 점령한 지중해 연안의 요충지 시르테를 공격하는 등 기세를 올렸다.

작년 4월 하프타르 사령관이 자신을 따르는 부대들을 향해 서부 트리폴리 진격을 명령한 뒤 내전이 격화됐다.

리비아는 2011년 '아랍의 봄' 여파로 무아마르 카다피 정권이 무너진 뒤 무장세력이 난립했으며 현재 이슬람 운동단체 무슬림형제단 출신 인사가 주축인 리비아통합정부와 군벌 하프타르 세력으로 양분됐다.

유엔이 인정하는 리비아통합정부는 터키와 카타르의 지지를 받고 있다.

반면 하프타르 사령관을 지지하는 국가는 사우디아라비아, 이집트, 아랍에미리트(UAE), 러시아 등이다.
