(요하네스버그=연합뉴스) 김성진 특파원 = 남아프리카공화국 케이프타운에 있는 영국 제국주의자 세실 로즈의 흉상 머리가 훼손됐다고 현지언론이 15일 보도했다.

로즈는 19세기 당시 남아프리카 총독을 지낸 인물로, 동상 훼손은 이번 주 발생한 것으로 보인다.

테이블마운틴 국립공원 순찰대는 지난 13일 로즈 메모리얼 구역을 순찰하던 중 흉상 파괴를 발견했다.

순찰대 대변인은 "동상의 머리가 앵글 그라인더 같은 것으로 잘려 나갔다. 그 시점은 일요일(12일) 밤에서 월요일 아침 사이"라면서 경찰과 함께 정확한 사건 경위를 조사할 것이라고 말했다.

2015년 4월에도 케이프타운 대학 구내에서 세실 로즈의 다른 동상은 수주간의 학생 시위 끝에 제거된 바 있다.

미국과 영국에서는 최근 '흑인 생명도 소중하다'(BLM) 운동을 촉발시킨 흑인 남성 조지 플로이드 사망 사건 이후 남부연합 군 인사, 노예주, 식민주의자 등의 동상이 뒤엎어지고 있다.

남아공에서도 비슷한 일들이 벌어지고 있으며 이번 로즈 반달리즘(공공기물 파손) 사건은 가장 최근에 일어난 것이다.
