터키 국방 "동지중해 긴장 관련 수일 내 그리스와 회담할 것"

(이스탄불=연합뉴스) 김승욱 특파원 = 터키 국방부 장관이 지중해 동부 천연가스 시추와 관련한 긴장을 완화하기 위해 수일 내로 그리스 관계자들을 만날 것이라고 밝혔다.

훌루시 아카르 터키 국방부 장관은 31일(현지시간) 이슬람 명절인 이드 알 아드하(희생제)를 맞아 북서부 에디르네 주(州)의 모스크를 방문한 자리에서 기자들에게 이같이 말했다.

아카르 장관은 "그리스 관계자들이 앙카라(터키 수도)를 방문할 것"이라며 "우리는 이런 회의로 문제를 해결하려고 하며, 이런 방향으로 작업이 계속될 것"이라고 전했다.

앞서 스텔리오스 페차스 그리스 정부 대변인은 지난 27일 "그리스는 국제법과 선린관계의 틀 안에서 터키와 협상에 들어갈 준비가 돼 있다"고 말했다.

터키와 그리스는 터키의 전신인 오스만 제국이 그리스를 점령하고, 그리스가 이에 반발해 독립 투쟁을 벌이면서 견원지간이 됐다.

지금도 세계적으로 유명한 앙숙인 두 나라는 동(東) 지중해의 분단국 키프로스의 대륙붕 자원 개발을 두고 터키는 북키프로스튀르크공화국(북키프로스)을, 그리스는 키프로스공화국(키프로스)을 지원하며 대치를 이어가고 있다.

터키는 최근 키프로스 섬 연안뿐 아니라 그리스의 로도스·카파토스·카스텔로리조 섬 남쪽 해역에 시추선을 투입해 다음 달 2일까지 천연가스 탐사 및 시추에 나설 것이라고 밝혔다.

이는 그리스가 주장하는 배타적경제수역(EEZ)을 침범하는 것으로, 그리스는 물론 미국과 프랑스의 비판을 야기했다.

터키와 그리스 사이 바다인 에게해의 섬 대부분은 1923년 체결된 로잔 조약에 따라 그리스 영토가 됐으나, 터키는 2000년대 이후 에르도안 대통령이 이끄는 정의개발당의 집권이 이어지자 로잔 조약의 개정을 요구하고 있다.
