'친일파'로, '전쟁영웅'으로…백선엽을 부르는 다른 이름들

일제강점기 간도특설대 근무…친일반민족행위자에 포함돼 논란

6·25전쟁 다부동 전투로 북한군 대구 진출 막아…평양 첫 탈환

(서울=연합뉴스) 최평천 기자 = 한국군 최초의 4성 장군 백선엽. 누군가는 그를 '친일파'로, 누군가는 그를 '6·25 전쟁영웅'으로 부른다.

한민족 비극의 역사인 일제강점기와 6·25전쟁 당시 각각 정반대의 길을 걸었던 것으로 평가받는 백 장군이 10일 향년 100세로 별세했다.

1920년 11월 23일 평안남도 강서에서 태어난 백 장군은 1939년 평양사범학교를 졸업하고, 일본이 중국 둥베이(東北)지방에 세운 국가인 만주국의 중앙육군훈련처를 졸업했다.

1943년 4월 만주국군 소위로 임관하고, 조선인 독립군 토벌대로 악명 높은 간도특설대에서 근무했다.

친일·반민족 행위를 조사·연구하는 시민단체인 민족문제연구소가 출간한 친일인명사전에 따르면 백 장군은 1943년 12월 간도특설대 기박련(기관총·박격포중대) 소속으로 중국 팔로군 공격 작전에 참여했다. 일제 패망 때 그의 신분은 만주국군 중위였다.

간도특설대는 일제 패망 전까지 동북항일연군과 팔로군을 대상으로 108차례 토공 작전을 벌였고, 이들에게 살해된 항일 무장세력과 민간인은 172명에 달한다.

백 장군은 생전 간도특설대에 근무한 적은 있지만, 독립군과 직접 전투를 한 적은 없다고 주장했다.

하지만 백 장군이 1983년 일본에서 출간한 '대(對) 게릴라전-미국은 왜 졌는가'라는 책에는 간도특설대 활동이 반민족 행위였음을 시인하는 취지의 기술이 담겨있다.

백 장군은 책에서 "한국인이 독립을 위해 싸우고 있었던 한국인을 토벌한 것이기 때문에 이이제이(以夷制夷)를 내세운 일본의 책략에 완전히 빠져든 형국이었다"고 썼다.

백 장군의 복무 시절인 1944년 7월, 9월, 11월 간도특설대가 무고한 조선인 등을 살해하거나 식량을 강탈했다는 등의 기록은 당시 상황을 기록한 '중국조선민족발자취 총서'에 담겨있기도 한다.

대통령 직속 '친일반민족행위 진상규명위원회'는 2009년 친일반민족행위자 명단을 발표하면 백 장군을 포함했다.

백 장군이 독립군을 직접 토벌했는지의 진실은 결국 명확히 드러나지 않았지만, 2년 남짓의 간도특설대 경력은 백 장군에게 친일파라는 지울 수 없는 오명을 남겼다.

백 장군은 해방 이후 육군 중위로 임관했고, 대한민국 정부 수립 후 육군본부 정보국장(대령)으로 재직했다.

1950년 4월 최전방 부대인 1사단 사단장이던 백 장군은 그해 6월 25일 전쟁이 발발하자 서울에서 즉각 사단 사령부로 이동해 부대를 지휘했다.

백 장군이 사령부에 도착했을 당시 이미 개성은 함락됐고, 사단은 궤멸 상태에 빠진 것으로 전해졌다.

그해 8월 북한군의 남하로 낙동강 전선까지 후퇴한 백 장군은 6·25 전쟁 중 가장 치열했던 전투로 꼽히는 다부동 전투를 통해 북한군의 대구 진출을 막아냈다.

백 장군이 지휘하는 1사단은 경상북도 칠곡군 다부동에서 미군 부대를 피해 국군을 노린 북한군과 처절한 전투를 벌였다.

백 장군은 회고록에서 "내가 앞장서 싸우겠다. 만약 내가 후퇴하면 나를 먼저 쏘라"며 권총을 들고 병사들과 돌격을 했다고 회고했다.

다부동 전투로 북한군의 예봉을 꺾은 국군과 미군은 낙동강 방어선을 구축했고, 그해 9월 15일 인천상륙작전으로 반격에 나섰다.

1사단은 1950년 10월 미 1기갑사단과 함께 합동작전을 펼쳐 가장 먼저 평양을 탈환했다. 6·25전쟁에서의 활약으로 백 장군은 미군들 사이에서도 전쟁영웅으로 불리게 됐다.

전쟁 중 1사단장, 1군단장, 육군참모총장 등을 역임한 백 장군은 1953년 1월 국군의 첫 대장으로 진급했다.

1953년 7월 27일 정전협정 체결 당시 한국대표단으로 참석하며 6·25전쟁의 시작과 끝을 함께했다.

전쟁 이후 휴전선 관리를 맡은 1야전군사령관을 한 뒤 1957년 다시 육군참모총장을 맡아 국군 현대화에 힘썼다.

1960년 대장으로 예편한 백 장군은 중국 대사, 프랑스·네덜란드·벨기에 대사, 캐나다 대사, 교통부 장관 등을 역임했다.
