"나치 강제수용소 경비병도 학살에 조력"…93세에 집행유예 2년

(베를린=연합뉴스) 이광빈 특파원 = 2차 세계대전 당시 강제수용소에서 경비병으로 근무했던 93세 독일 남성이 유대인 등의 학살에 조력한 혐의로 집행유예 2년을 선고받았다.

독일 함부르크 법원은 23일(현지시간) 나치 독일이 점령해 설치한 폴란드의 슈투트호프 수용소에서 나치 친위대(SS) 소속으로 근무했던 브루노 D.에게 이같이 판결했다.

브루노 D.는 17∼18세이던 1944년 8월부터 1945년 4월까지 슈투트호프 수용소에서 경비병으로 복무했다.

폴란드 항구도시인 그단스키 인근의 슈투트호프 수용소는 나치가 1939년 9월 독일 밖에 설치한 최초의 수용소다.

검찰은 피고인이 5천232명의 수감자들이 살해되는 과정에서 조력했다는 혐의로 기소하고, 징역 3년을 구형했다.

슈투트호프 수용소에서는 유대인 2만8천명을 포함해 6만3천∼6만5천명이 사망했다. 1944년에 가스실이 설치돼 집단학살에 사용됐다.

검찰은 브루노 D.와 같은 경비원들이 가스실의 존재와 벌어지는 일들을 알고 있었고, 수감자들의 도피를 적극적으로 막았다며 유죄를 주장했다.

피고인은 법정에서 "미친 지옥을 겪은 모든 사람, 그들의 친척, 생존자들에게 사과하고 싶다"고 말했다.

독일에선 10여년 전까지만 해도 나치 시대에 집단수용소에서 근무한 경비병들에 대해선 직접적인 가혹행위 증거가 나와야 유죄 판결이 내려졌다.

그러나 지난 2011년 독일 법원 강제수용소에서 경비병으로 근무했던 우크라이나 출신인 존 뎀야누크(당시 91세)를 상대로 직접적인 증거가 없는데도 살인 조력 혐의로 징역 5년을 선고하면서 경비병들에 대한 유죄 판결이 이어지고 있다.

독일에서는 살인죄에 대해 공소시효가 없다.
