(서울=연합뉴스) 강성철 기자 = "할아버지는 6·25 전쟁 때 총탄과 폭탄이 빗발치는 속에서 동료들과 등을 맞대고 격려한 덕분에 진지를 사수했던 걸 틈날 때마다 들려주셨어요. 개인은 모래알처럼 별 볼 일 없지만 뭉치면 큰 힘이 된다는 걸 그때 배웠고 평생의 신조로 삼아오셨다고요."

남미에서 유일하게 한국전쟁에 참여한 콜롬비아 참전용사 후안 로하스(90)의 손녀인 발렌티나 로하스(24)의 꿈은 한국 유학이다.

그는 수도 보고타의 하베리아나대에서 생명공학을 전공했고, 지금은 보고타 세종학당에서 한국어를 배우고 있다. 한국에서 대학원에 진학해 국제적 경쟁력을 갖춘 산업공학 분야 석·박사 학위 취득을 위해서다.

'유엔군 참전의 날(27일)' 기념 연합뉴스의 참전용사 후손 인터뷰에 응한 그는 "조부는 전쟁으로 잿더미만 남았던 한국이 오늘날 눈부신 발전을 일궈낸 건 전쟁터의 동료들처럼 뭉쳐서 서로 돕고 협력해왔기 때문이라고 늘 강조했다"며 이같이 밝혔다.

콜롬비아는 6·25전쟁이 발발하자 유엔군의 일원으로 보병대대와 프리깃함 1척을 1951년 1월 한국에 보냈다. 이후 금성지구, 김화지구, 불모고지 등 격전지 전투에 참여하며 1995년 3월까지 주둔했다. 이 기간 육군 5천100여명과 해군 300여명이 참여해 163명이 전사하고, 69명이 실종됐으며, 448명이 다쳤다.

당시 22살이던 조부는 제2기병대 소속으로 1952년 참전해 인천 북방 천덕산 일대 불모고지 등에서 중공군을 앞세운 북한군과 치열한 전투를 치렀다.

발렌티나는 "조부는 장마철 전투에서 비 그치면 영롱히 빛나던 무지개, 겨울 진지에서 난생처음 맞이한 눈송이, 순박하고 정이 많은 한국인과 아름다운 산하 등을 지금도 기억하고 있다"며 "얼마 전 한국의 현재 모습이 담긴 사진첩을 보여드렸더니 감격스러워했다"고 소개했다.

1953년 귀국해 한국을 한 번도 다시 찾은 적이 없기에 포화로 아무것도 남은 게 없던 당시와 너무 다르게 발전한 모습을 보아서다.

그는 귀국 후 고향에서 영웅 대접을 받았다. 민주주의 수호를 위해 몸을 바쳐 싸웠던 공로를 인정받아 정부가 취업을 알선해줬고 덕분에 학교 교사였던 할머니를 만나 가정도 꾸렸다.

어려서부터 조부로부터 한국 이야기를 듣고 자란 발렌티나는 자연스럽게 한국 관심이 커졌고 사춘기 시절 한류팬이 된 이후로 지금도 'K-드라마'를 즐겨본다.

그는 "얼마 전 세종학당 관계자에게서 참전 용사 후손 초청 장학제도가 있으니 한국어 공부를 열심히 하라는 이야기를 듣고 조부에게 말했더니 '70년 전의 도움을 잊지 않고 보은을 하는 나라는 어디에도 없을 것'이라고 기뻐했다"고 말했다.

발렌티나는 "조부는 20일로 90세 생일을 맞았는데 지금도 한국에서 다시 전쟁이 발발하면 참전하겠다고 호언장담한다"며 "한국을 지키는데 목숨 걸었던 것을 평생의 자부심으로 살아온 참전용사의 후손이라는 긍지를 갖고 한국의 선진문물을 배워 콜롬비아 발전에 일조하겠다"고 포부를 밝혔다.
