출시 5주년 당근마켓 "'슬세권' 책임지는 지역플랫폼 되겠다"

'월 사용자 1천만명' 목전…금지물품·사기 근절 비결은 '자체 AI'

"지역 광고로 수익, 전국 광고는 대기업도 안 받아…해외 진출 추진 중"

당근마켓 김재현 공동대표는 출시 5주년을 맞은 15일 연합뉴스와 인터뷰에서 이렇게 말했다.

2015년 7월 15일 서비스를 시작한 당근마켓은 동네 이웃끼리 중고 물품을 사고파는 지역 기반 중고 거래 플랫폼이다.

이 앱은 서비스 5년 만에 중고나라·번개장터 등 경쟁자를 제치고 국내에서 가장 많이 이용되는 중고 거래 플랫폼으로 도약했다.

월 사용자 수(MAU)가 올해 1월 480만명에서 6월 890만명으로 폭증했다. 누적 사용자 수는 1천200만명, 월평균 거래액은 2천억원에 달한다. 넷플릭스를 제치고 올해 2분기에 국내에서 가장 많이 다운로드된 앱 1위에 오르기도 했다.

김 대표는 이런 성장세가 "신기하고, 기대 이상"이라면서 "올해 안에 MAU 1천만명을 달성하는 게 목표였는데, 지금 속도대로면 더 빨라져서 9월께 목표를 달성할 것 같다"고 말했다.

성공 비결을 묻자 그는 "당근마켓은 기존에 없었던 중고 거래 플랫폼"이라며 "다른 플랫폼은 한 번 보면 안 볼 사람들과 거래하지만, 당근마켓에서는 동네 이웃과 거래를 하니까 거래가 활성화되고 거래 매너가 좋다"고 자평했다.

신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)도 당근마켓 성장에 예상치 못한 도움을 준 것으로 분석된다.

사용자들은 "집에 있게 되니까 집을 정리하면서 필요 없는 물건을 발견했다", "집에 있는 시간이 느니까 필요한 물건이 늘어났다"며 코로나19 이후 당근마켓을 활발히 쓰게 됐다고 말한다.

당근마켓 김재현·김용현 공동대표는 카카오[035720] 출신이다.

카카오에서 근무하던 이들은 판교에서 IT업계 종사자끼리 중고 물건을 거래하면 좋겠다는 생각에 2015년 카카오를 퇴사하고 '판교장터'라는 지역 거래 앱을 개발했다. 이후 서비스 지역을 확장하면서 이름을 당근마켓으로 바꿨다.

굴지의 IT기업 출신이 만든 서비스답게 당근마켓은 인공지능(AI)의 힘으로 '굴러가는' 서비스다.

중고 거래 플랫폼의 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 '물품 추천'과 '거래 금지 물품 식별'을 AI가 수행한다.

AI의 역할을 묻자 김 대표는 자신의 노트북에 관리자용 화면을 띄워서 보여줬다.

3시간 안에 올라온 물품을 '업자 확률 높은 순', '가품(가짜 물건) 확률 높은 순', '동물 확률 높은 순', '주류 확률 높은 순' 등으로 필터링해 볼 수 있었다.

단 4명이 개발·관리하고 있다는 당근마켓의 자체 AI는 사진만 보고도 즉각적으로 가짜 명품이나 동물·주류를 식별해 걸러낼 정도로 고도화돼있었다.

김 대표는 "물건이 한 달에 1천만건 정도 올라오기 때문에 사람이 필터링할 수 없다"면서 "AI가 머신러닝(기계학습)을 하면서 정확도를 높이고 있다"고 설명했다.

중고 거래 플랫폼을 좀먹는 거래 사기도 AI 기반 데이터 분석으로 잡는다. 사기 의심 사용자가 채팅한 내용, 기존 사기 이력 등을 데이터로 관리한다.

당근마켓의 수익은 지역 소상공인 광고가 책임진다.

당근마켓 화면은 동네에 올라온 거래 물품을 소셜미디어(SNS) 피드처럼 차례로 볼 수 있는 모양새인데, 간헐적으로 지역 가게 광고가 노출된다.

광고비는 도달률로 봤을 때 전단지를 돌리는 것보다 저렴한 수준이다.

당근마켓의 목표가 당장의 수익이 아니라 소상공인과 지역 주민들의 연결에 있기 때문이다.

김 대표는 "전국 단위 광고는 대기업이어도 받지 않는다"면서 "소상공인이나 지역 매장처럼 동네 주민과 연계성이 있는 광고만 받고 있다"고 말했다.

현재 당근마켓에는 소상공인 위주로 전국 업체 6만곳이 광고를 얹고 있다. 당근마켓은 전국 모든 지역 소상공인이 당근마켓을 이용하는 것이 목표다.

김 대표는 "동네 상인과 주민을 연결해 지역 경제 활성화까지 기여하는 플랫폼으로 나아가고 싶다"고 강조했다.

그는 '추후 배달·주문 서비스까지 확장할 계획도 있느냐'고 묻자 "아직은 모르겠지만, 가능성은 있다"며 "우선은 청소·가사도우미 등 구인·구직 서비스, 부동산 중개 서비스 등을 계획하고 있다"고 예고했다.

당근마켓의 또 다른 목표는 글로벌 진출이다. 이미 지난해 영국 일부 지역에서 시범 서비스를 시작했다.

김 대표는 "아직 직원이 70명뿐인 작은 스타트업이지만, 사업 확장을 지속할 예정"이라며 "올해 해외에서도 가능성의 씨앗을 보고 싶다"고 덧붙였다.
