기아차, 라파엘 나달 5년 더 후원한다…"21년 연속 동행"

(서울=연합뉴스) 장하나 기자 = 기아차[000270]가 24일 오전(현지시간) 페이스북 라이브 방송을 통해 세계적인 테니스 선수 라파엘 나달과 5년간 후원 계약을 연장하는 온라인 조인식을 가졌다고 26일 밝혔다.

이에 따라 기아차와 나달은 오는 2025년까지 파트너십을 연장, 2004년 첫 후원 계약을 체결한 이래 21년 연속으로 동행하게 됐다고 기아차는 설명했다.

이번 재계약 조인식은 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 이슈를 고려해 전통적인 대면 형식이 아닌 서울 기아차 본사와 나달의 고향이자 나달 아카데미가 위치한 스페인 마요르카를 실시간 연결하는 가상 조인식 형태로 진행됐다.

해시태그 '#GetRafaMoving'을 활용해 온라인으로 홍보된 이번 이벤트는 나달의 페이스북 계정을 통해 전 세계 팬에게 생중계됐으며, 이날 라이브 방송에는 약 13만여 명의 팬들이 함께했다.

팬들은 조인식 직후 가장 보고 싶은 나달의 훈련 세션을 온라인으로 투표했고, 나달은 서브로 타깃 맞추기, 제자리 돌고 상대 공 받아치기, 묘기 샷 치기 등을 현장에서 직접 수행하며 팬들에게 색다른 즐거움을 선사했다.

나달은 "지난 몇 달간 코로나로 테니스를 즐기지 못했던 팬들에게 특별한 이벤트를 선사할 수 있어 즐거웠다"며 "기아는 17살 때부터 나와 함께 하며 테니스 선수로서도, 한 인간으로서도 내 여정에 큰 부분을 차지해왔기에 코트 안팎에서 함께 하게 될 앞으로의 5년도 큰 기대가 된다"고 말했다.

송호성 기아차 사장도 "라파엘 나달과의 지난 16년간의 특별한 파트너십은 전 세계 수백만 명이 테니스를 즐길 수 있도록 영감을 줘왔다"며 "나달과의 파트너십을 5년간 연장할 수 있어 기쁘고 향후 상호 발전을 위해 영감을 주고받을 수 있기를 기대한다"고 밝혔다.

2006년부터 기아차 글로벌 홍보대사로 활동 중인 라파엘 나달은 스페인 출신으로 이달 기준 세계 랭킹 2위에 올라있으며, 세계 4대 그랜드 슬램 대회에서 총 19번의 우승 트로피를 거머쥐기도 했다.
