"주한미군 철수? 미국인 43% 반대, 찬성은 27%"

미 국제여론연구소 조사…공화당 지지자, 찬성 비율 높아

미국 웨스턴켄터키 대학 산하 국제여론연구소(IPOL)의 티머시 리치 교수 연구팀이 지난 7일 미국인 1천24명을 상대로 웹에서 진행, 17일(현지시간) 발표한 설문조사 결과에 따르면 응답자의 42.85%는 주한미군 철수에 반대하는 것으로 집계됐다.

응답자의 12.93%는 강력한 반대 의사를, 29.92%는 반대한다고 각각 밝힌 것으로 조사됐다.

반면, 응답자의 26.84%는 주한미군 철수에 찬성하는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 강력히 찬성하는 응답자는 4.83%, 찬성하는 응답자는 22.01%였다.

응답자의 30.31%는 주한미군 철수에 찬성도 반대도 하지 않는다고 밝혔다.

지지 정당별로 보면 민주당 지지자의 경우 주한미군 철수 반대 의견을 가진 응답자의 비율이 45.42%로 공화당 지지자(43.07%)보다 높았다.

주한미군 철수 찬성 의견을 가진 응답자 비율은 공화당 지지자가 32.85%로 민주당 지지자(23.94%)보다 높았다.

이런 결과는 민주당 지지자들이 북한을 더 즉각적인 위협으로 인식하기 때문이며, 도널드 트럼프 대통령이 비용분담을 거론한 데 따른 것으로 보인다고 연구팀은 설명했다.

연구팀은 "미국인들이 주한미군 주둔을 광범위하게 지지하는 이유는 정확히 집어내기 어렵다"면서 "긍정적인 한미관계의 역사와 북한의 적대감이 영향을 미쳤을 수 있다"고 말했다.

또 "전쟁 억제 성공과 함께 전면적인 무력충돌이 없을 것이라는 기대 때문일 수도 있다"고 덧붙였다.

한편, 미국 월스트리트저널(WSJ)은 17일(현지시간) 미국 국방부가 백악관에 주한미군 감축 옵션을 제시했다고 보도했다.

한미 간 방위비 분담금 협상이 교착상태를 이어가는 상태에서 미국 측이 주독미군에 이어 실제로 주한미군 감축 카드를 꺼낼지 주목된다.
