'반도' 강동원 "돋보이지 않는 주인공…제2의 배우 인생 준비"

울=연합뉴스) 한미희 기자 = 강동원은 긴 팔과 다리로 만들어내는 우아한 몸놀림의 액션으로 돋보이는 배우였다. 물론 목소리만 출연했어도(그 놈 목소리) 존재감은 뚜렷했다.

연상호 감독의 세 번째 실사 영화 '반도'에서도 그는 군복을 입고 멋지게 등장한다. 하지만 곧 어린 여자아이가 좀비들을 쓸어버리며 거침없이 모는 차 뒷좌석에서 퍼덕대다 기절한다.

10일 만난 강동원은 "감독님이 '그렇게까지 할 줄은 몰랐다'며 너무 좋아하셨다"고 했다. 인물의 이야기와 감정선을 쌓기 위해 많은 이야기를 나눴기에, 감독이 별다른 디렉션을 주지 않은 상황이었다.

강동원은 "그래야 (운전하는 역을 맡은) 이레가 돋보일 것 같았고, 그래야 한다고 생각했다"고 말했다.

주인공이긴 하지만 이토록 도드라지지 않는 강동원은 낯설면서도 자연스러웠다.

"어렸을 때는 저도 돋보이고 싶었죠. '반도'의 정석은 돋보이겠다는 생각은 처음부터 안 했어요. 사실 정석은 배우로서 매력적인 캐릭터도 아니에요. 강인하긴 하지만 어떻게 보면 답답한 면도 있고. 영웅이 아니라 다른 캐릭터를 영웅으로 만들어주는 캐릭터죠. 그래서 신선했고, 좋았던 것 같아요. 특히 '반도'는 액션에서 아역이나 여성이 활약하는 영화라 더 좋았죠."

그는 "연기하는 사람으로서 더 하고 싶은 욕망이 있지만, 더 안 하는 것도 굉장한 용기라고 생각한다"고 덧붙였다.

"원래도 과하게 연기하는 스타일은 아닌데, 시도해 볼 때마다 캐릭터가 무너지는 느낌이 들더라고요. 그러면서 알았죠. 안 하는 게 낫구나. (웃음) 물론 '전우치'처럼 캐릭터의 매력으로 가야 하는 건 (과하게) 해줘야 하지만, '반도'는 제가 튀면 과해질 수 있으니까요."

잘 되겠다 싶은 작품도 흥미가 없으면 못 하겠고, 예전에 했던 비슷한 캐릭터는 하기 싫어 새로운 작품과 캐릭터, 신인 감독들과의 작업을 선택해 왔다는 그는 "요즘이 데뷔 이후 가장 중요한 시기가 아닐까 싶다"고 했다.

"지금 제2의 기틀을 마련해 놓지 않으면 매너리즘에 빠질 수 있다는 생각이 들어요. 배우로서 다시 시작하는 느낌이랄까."

벌써 데뷔 17년 차, 나이도 어느새 40대에 접어들었다. 9일 시사회 뒤에 열린 간담회에서 유진 역을 맡은 이예원(10)이 강동원과 이정현을 두고 "유명한 분인 줄 처음에는 몰랐다", "강동원 삼촌은 옛날에 진짜 핫했다고 하더라"라고 말해 강동원을 쓰러뜨렸다.

강동원은 "(그런 말은) 어제 처음 들었다"면서도 "늘 그런 생각을 하고 있긴 하다. 10년 뒤면 50인데, 예원이 말대로 언제까지 핫할 수 있겠나"라며 수긍했다.

이명세 감독의 '형사'(2005) 때부터 고난도 와이어 액션을 위해 혹독한 훈련과 무용으로 갈고닦은 실력은 여전히 녹슬지 않아 액션 스쿨에 가도 배울 게 없는 수준이지만, "이제 진짜 힘들긴 하다"고 말할 땐 울상을 지으며 진심을 토로하기도 했다.

데뷔 초 이후 드라마에 출연하지 않았던 그를 언젠가는 다시 볼 수 있을지도 모르겠다.

그는 "영화와 드라마의 개념도 무너지고 있는 것 같다"며 "'검사외전'을 제작한 윤종빈 감독과 기획한 것도 있고, 좋은 기회만 있으면 다시 할 수 있을 것"이라고 말했다.
