(서울=연합뉴스) 유택형 기자 = 737맥스 기종의 결함 사태에 신종 코로나 바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 여파로 인한 항공기 수요 부진까지 겹치며 어려움에 처한 미국의 항공기 제작사 보잉에 오랜만에 희소식이 전해졌다.

보잉은 13일(현지시간) 미 공군과 약 228억 달러(27조5천60억원) 규모의 F-15EX 전투기 조달 계약을 체결했다고 폭스 비즈니스가 보도했다.

보잉의 F-15EX 프로그램 담당 매니저인 로리 슈나이더는 이날 성명에서 "F-15EX는 F-15 계열 전투기 중 최첨단 기종"이라면서 "작전 범위와 가격, 무기 적재량 등의 부문에서 뛰어나 미 공군에 훌륭한 선택이 될 것"이라고 말했다.

보잉은 F-15EX의 1차 주문 8대와 선결제 기술 비용 등으로 약 12억 달러(1조4천468억원)를 미리 지급받았다.

이들 전투기는 보잉의 미주리주 세인트루이스 공장에서 제작되며 2대는 2021 회계연도에, 나머지 6대는 2023 회계연도에 각각 플로리다주 이글린 공군기지로 인도된다.

F-15EX는 동급 다른 어떤 전투기보다 많은 무기를 탑재할 수 있으며 길이 6.1ｍ의 초음속 미사일을 발사할 수 있다.

미 공군은 올 회계연도에 구매 승인이 난 8대와는 별도로 2021회계연도 몫으로 12대를 구매 요청했으며 5년간에 걸친 '방위 프로그램'(Future Years Defense Program)에 따라 76대를 추가로 구매 요청할 계획이다.

앞서 보잉은 2018년과 2019년 잇단 추락 참사로 운항이 정지된 차세대 주력기종 737 맥스 때문에 10조원 넘는 손실을 본 것으로 추산된 가운데 올해는 코로나19로 항공기 수주 물량이 급감하면서 한층 더 어려운 경영환경에 빠졌다.

올해 1∼4월 출하량은 56대로 작년 동기 대비 67% 감소한 것으로 알려졌다.
