"코로나19에 잘못 대응" 벨기에의회 화염병 투척 시도 남성 체포

(브뤼셀=연합뉴스) 김정은 특파원 = 벨기에에서 한 남성이 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)에 제대로 대응하지 못한 정치권에 대한 '보복'이라며 연방 의회에 화염병을 던지려 시도하다가 체포됐다고 현지 매체 등이 전했다.

28일(현지시간) 벨기에 일간지 '라 리브르 벨지크', AFP 통신 등에 따르면 36세의 한 남성이 전날 브뤼셀에 있는 벨기에 연방의회 건물 앞에서 집에서 만든 화염병을 던지려다가 경찰에 체포됐다.

이 남성이 화염병을 던지려 할 때 인근을 순찰하던 경찰이 개입했고, 그가 던진 화염병은 의회 건물 앞 보도에 떨어졌다.

이로 인해 다친 사람은 없었고, 보도에 경미한 피해만 발생했다.

용의자는 조사 과정에서 정치권이 코로나19에 따른 보건 위기에 잘못 대응했다면서 이에 대한 "보복"으로 이 같은 행동을 했다고 주장했다고 수사 당국은 전했다.

현지 수사 당국은 이 남성의 소지품에서 그가 극단주의적 신념을 갖고 있을지도 모른다는 점을 시사하는 문서를 발견했으나 그의 행동을 특정 정치적 신념과 연결할 객관적인 증거는 없으며, 용의자 역시 극우나 극좌 단체와 관계가 있다고 주장하지 않았다고 밝혔다.

현지 검찰 측은 현재로서는 테러 혐의점은 없다고 말했다.

벨기에는 유럽에서 인구 100만명당 코로나19 누적 확진자가 가장 많은 국가 가운데 하나다. 이날 현재 이 나라의 코로나19 누적 확진자는 6만6천428명, 누적 사망자는 9천822명이다.

벨기에는 코로나19 확산을 막기 위해 지난 3월부터 시민들의 통행을 제한하고 대다수 상점 문을 닫도록 하는 등 봉쇄 조치를 취했다.

이후 코로나19 확산세가 둔화하자 5월 초 두 달 만에 상점 영업을 재개토록 하는 등 본격적인 봉쇄완화에 들어갔다.

그러나 최근 코로나19 신규 확진자가 다시 증가세를 보이면서 상당수 공공장소에서 마스크 착용을 의무화하는 등 전염 확산을 막기 위한 조치를 강화하고 있다.
