이스라엘 네타냐후, 코로나19 사태 속 부패혐의 재판 진행

뇌물수수 등 혐의…법정에 출석하지는 않아

(카이로=연합뉴스) 노재현 특파원 = 베냐민 네타냐후(70) 이스라엘 총리의 부패 혐의에 대한 재판이 19일(현지시간) 예루살렘에서 진행됐다고 타임스오브이스라엘 등 이스라엘 언론이 보도했다.

예루살렘 법원은 내년 1월부터 일주일에 세 차례 증인 신문을 하기로 결정했다.

네타냐후 총리는 이날 법정에 출석하지 않았으며 그의 변호사가 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나 19)을 이유로 증인 신문 일정을 연기해야 한다고 주장했다.

앞서 네타냐후 총리는 올해 5월 24일 뇌물수수 등의 혐의로 첫 재판에 출석했다.

이스라엘의 현직 총리가 형사 재판을 받기는 처음이다.

앞서 이스라엘 검찰은 작년 11월 네타냐후 총리를 뇌물수수와 배임, 사기 등 비리 혐의 3건으로 기소한다고 발표했다.

네타냐후 총리는 할리우드 영화제작자 아논 밀천 등으로부터 수년간 '돔 페리뇽' 등 고급 샴페인과 '파르타가스' 쿠바산 시가 등 수십만 달러 상당의 선물을 받은 혐의를 받고 있다.

또 이스라엘 최대판매 부수를 자랑하는 일간지 예디오트 아흐로노트 발행인과 막후 거래를 통해 우호적인 기사를 대가로 경쟁지 발행 부수를 줄이려고 한 혐의도 받는다.

네타냐후 총리는 이런 혐의를 모두 부인한다.

한 달 전부터 예루살렘의 총리 관저 밖에서는 네타냐후 총리의 부패 혐의를 규탄하고 퇴진을 요구하는 시위가 이어졌다.

또 이번 재판은 코로나19 사태로 여론이 악화한 상황에서 진행됐다.

이스라엘 보건부는 18일 밤 코로나19 확진자가 하루 사이 1천906명 추가됐고 사망자도 9명 늘었다고 밝혔다.

일일 신규 확진자는 6일 791명에서 7일 1천473명으로 급증한 뒤 12일 연속 1천명을 넘었다.

19일 낮 기준으로 이스라엘의 코로나19 누적 확진자는 4만9천575명이고 코로나19로 인한 총 사망자는 406명이다.

6월부터 코로나19 재확산세가 뚜렷해지면서 정부가 봉쇄 조처를 너무 일찍 푼 것이 아니냐는 비판이 나온다.

아울러 이달 11일 지중해 도시 텔아비브에서는 정부가 코로나19로 인한 경제 위기에 제대로 대처하지 못하고 자영업자 등에 대한 보상도 충분하지 않다고 비판하는 대규모 시위가 열렸다.
