(광주=연합뉴스) 정회성 기자 = 5·18기념재단과 5월 3단체(유족회·부상자회·구속부상자회)는 31일 "서주석 청와대 국가안보실 1차장은 5·18 진상규명 의지를 표명하라"고 요구했다.

5월 단체들은 이날 성명을 내 "서주석 1차장은 511연구위원회 참여 이력이 2년 전 언론을 통해 알려지자 사과문을 발표하는 모습을 보였지만 헬기 사격 특별조사에 성실하게 임하지 않았다는 주장이 제기된 바 있다"고 지적했다.

단체는 "서주석 1차장이 5·18 진상규명조사위원회의 조사 대상이라는 사실에는 변함이 없다"며 "이번 기회에 자신을 둘러싼 의혹을 완전히 불식해야 한다"고 촉구했다.

서주석 1차관은 이력 논란이 불거진 2018년 국방부 차관 시절 511연구위에서 한국국방연구원(KIDA) 연구원으로 단순 업무만 맡았다고 해명했다.

511연구위는 국방부가 1988년 국회 '광주청문회'를 대비하고자 구성한 특별대책위원회의 실무위원회다.

계엄군의 폭력진압이 자위권 확보를 위한 불가피한 선택이었다는 논리를 세워 5·18 진실을 왜곡한 조직이라고 알려졌다.

광주시민단체협의회 등 광주지역 10여개 시민사회단체는 511연구위 참여 이력을 문제 삼으며 서주석 1차관에게 이달 29일 거취 표명을 요구했다.
